San Fratello

Born on the ashes of Apollonia, the ancient Greek city where today stands the Norman hermitage dedicated to the three martyred brothers in 253 A.D., San Fratello is an Arab-Byzantine village that stands around the Roccaforte of the historic center, where the foundations of the ancient castle of San Filadelfio are still visible. It is the name of the ancient citadel of Monte Vecchio. The relics of the three Apulian saints were taken to the new San Filadelfio, which was later called Santi Fratelli and then San Fratello. A trace of its ancient name remains in the Italic rooster bequeathed by the Normans and their following, the Lombards from Liguria, Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna. The locals, in fact, speak two languages, a Sicilian bund adapted to communicate with the rest of Sicily, and the Gallo-Italic language. San Fratello is today the town that hosts the Sanfratellano horse, left by the Normans who came to conquer Saracen Sicily, the Negro pirk of the Nebrodi, the feast of the Jews in Holy Week, a breathtaking historic center, the sanctuary dedicated to San Benedetto called the Moro by San Fratello, the first black saint of the Church venerated in Latin America.
